Tim’s Top 20 Number 88

It’s a very good Friday on this week’s chart, with the return of the Queen of Pop as well as the biggest supergroup since The Travelin Wilburys. 7 new entries, 2 re-entries, 1 non-mover, 3 climbers and 7 droppers make up this week’s chart.

After a 45-week absence, Labrinth, Sia and Diplo’s supergroup return to the chart and back on top as supergroup LSD following the release of their 10-track long player last week. “Genius” is the highest entry of the album’s 3 that appear on this week’s top 20, the other 2 being the album’s title track and the album’s 2nd single, released originally at the tail end of 2018. The album is a perfectly colourful fusion of pop, soul and electronic squelchiness you’d expect from the coming together of these 3 music powerhouses in their own right.

Sadly, the album is likely to miss the UK top 40 altogether. Another example of the project’s record label, Syco, losing the plot when it comes to promotion…or lack of.

Also re-entering due to the release of an album I’m glad I didn’t buy in the end, is the first single from Emma Bunton’s “My Happy Place” album, which is set to appear in the top 20 of the UK chart this week. Had 8 of the 10 tracks not been pound shop PA cover versions of random songs, and she’d done a whole album of original songs in the same vain as “Baby, Please Don’t Stop” we may be having a completely different narrative here now.

Madonna is BACK!!!! “Medellin” sounds like a natural progression from 2015’s “Rebel Heart”, fused with a more mature and refined take on radio of the last 2 years, making the release of the album “Madame X” on June 14th very exciting indeed. It won’t be a hit in its own right in the long run but, how many 60 year-olds can say their new single hit #2 on the global itunes chart within 48 hours of release? Bow down, bitches!

Also back is the Swindon songstress whose affected whine normally makes me switch off. However, like the Fifty Shades song before it, the production behind “Sixteen” gives Ellie Goulding a very strong start on the top 20. There are a lot of songs that are coming out at the moment that are blending EDM with 4/4 rhythms and banishing the minimalist plinky plonky bullshit of the last few years (refer to Justin Bieber or Ed’s “Shape Of You” etc.) to the pop dustbin hopefully forever. I wouldn’t be surprised if Max Martin had something to do with “Sixteen”, it’s very well produced.

Finally, I’m late to the party when it comes to Billie Eilish. I heard 10 seconds of “Wish You Were Gay”, thought I summed her up already and didn’t listen to her anymore. But, a colleague at work recommended “Bad Guy” to me and I’m now hooked. I haven’t given the album a listen yet. That will probably be later in the week.

COMING SOON:

There’s no Smash or Gash this week as there’s nothing new out worth mentioning.

I’ll be on the radio every Sunday very soon! More information as soon as I know.

Happy Easter!
